On April 26th and 27th, from 1 to 6 pm, artists in DUMBO will open their doors to the public as part of DUMBO Open Studios, offering a rare look inside the art studios along the Brooklyn waterfront. Since the 1970s, DUMBO has been shaped by its vibrant art community. This interview series highlights a handful of participating artists in 2025. Each response offers a glimpse of what’s waiting behind the studio door. Audrey has been in DUMBO since March, 2024. Her studio is at 45 Main Street, #1052.

What will we see in your studio?
In my studio, you’ll see my abstract, color-centric works. I build the color with gradients that can give the viewer sensations of vibration, so you may feel that. For open studios, I’ll be showing the most recently completed paintings. Two diptychs will be up. The first is called Piano Piano, which is composed of two 30″ square canvases with the same composition and colors but in reverse order. Its high-intensity colors contrast with the soft color transitions and the title, which comes from an Italian expression (also used in musical scores) meaning “Softly, softly.”
The other diptych’s working title is Siren. While many of my diptych compositions use mirroring, in Siren, I’m taking a new approach by employing completely different compositions for each canvas. While it is not yet resolved, my aim is to have the panels united by color and a sense of reflection between the two panels. My multi-panel works result in multiple compositional arrangements, which I do not always anticipate. Making the compositions involves an element of chance and is part of my internal dialogue with the concept of control in my work and beyond. The multi-panel piece you’ll see in my studio is called Echo, which has very dark, deep blue areas that release out to lighter bands of greens, blues, and magenta. You’ll probably be seeing it as a horizontal composition, but it also has vertical and even off-kilter hanging arrangements.
I’m also developing a new series of single-panel paintings titled If If, using the same composition in each of the 40” x 30” canvases to explore a variety of color dynamics. As these paintings accumulate and hang side by side, relationships develop and flow between them, and they begin to create the sense of a chain.
I always do my best to clean up the studio clutter before open studios, but many paint jars and materials will still be visible, as well as creations that result from my process, like my collection of tape balls. And although I anticipate sharing the works I’ve described above, a lot could change before the doors open!
