Lou Reed’s song All Tomorrow’s Parties, featured on the Velvet Underground & Nico’s debut studio album, was allegedly inspired by the musician’s observation of Andy Warhol’s ‘Factory,’ an epicenter where camp, craze, and creativity flowed in abundance. With a tangible sense of energetic exploration, M. David & Co.’s mega-scale group show at Art Cake echoes this creative exchange by articulating the dynamic intergenerational connections between emerging and established artists across media.

The Art Cake venue in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, offers a spacious and distinctive setting, its three interconnected spaces creating an inherent sense of fluidity. This architectural layout provides a suitable backdrop for M. David & Co. to showcase such an ambitious scope of artwork. The gallery took the opportunity to welcome back many artists previously featured in solo, two-person, and group exhibitions under Life on Mars/M—David & Co. in Bushwick. Additionally, M. David & Co. has invited artists from Art Cake’s Artist Residency Program, recognized for its vibrant and growing artist community, and artists they have long wished to exhibit.

The exhibition, extending from the elongated entry through the successive gallery spaces, features a deliberate ‘salon-style’ clustering of artworks. This arrangement, though seemingly dense, makes effective use of the venue’s generous vertical space, allowing each piece to maintain its distinct presence. The proximity of the artworks, balanced by the ample height, encourages a thoughtful interplay between space and form.

With its magical umbrella flights toward the skylight, Judy Pfaff’s site-specific installation brilliantly utilizes the space’s majestic height, creating an imaginative leap. Colors and shapes also flow and cross-pollinate throughout the exhibition, where paintings, sculptures, and installations of diverse scales and artistic approaches merge into a vibrant and alluring visual feast. All Tomorrow’s Parties will have its final viewing this Friday, July 5th, and Saturday, July 6th.
