Extreme Whether Show at Icebox4

With only a few days left before it closes on October 4, Extreme Whether Show at Icebox4 offers a gathering of 21 artists responding to the turbulence of the present. Curated by Tom Fitzgibbon, the exhibition unfolds less as a single argument than as a shifting field of voices, unsettled, layered, and in dialogue.

Fitzgibbon frames the show within a climate of ongoing turbulence. “Whether we agree or disagree with our current leaders, we have a long list of tough issues that are not going away,” he notes. He connects this unsettled atmosphere to changes in the art world itself, from the rise of art fairs and mega-galleries to the influence of social media and artificial intelligence. The exhibition positions itself within this state of flux, suggesting that instability is not only political but also structural within the cultural field.

The exhibition brings together Matt Blackwell, Ben Cohen, Denise Corley, Bryan Corley, Carlo D’Ansemi, James Esber, Coleen Fitzgibbon, Stephen Lack, Jeffrey Morabito, Celeste Morton, Tom Otterness, Will Patterson, Cordy Ryman, Judith Simonian, Suzanne Unrein, Liam Van Horn, Deborah Wasserman, Yue Yuan, and Charles Yuen, a multi-generational group working at different points in their careers, whose contributions intersect to form shifting crosscurrents and layered conversations within the gallery.

Entering the show feels like stepping into a weather system: fragmented, overlapping, and in motion. The energy comes from the proximity of distinct approaches and sensibilities, creating an environment where friction is part of the experience and uncertainty itself carries weight.

Icebox4’s independent structure shapes this character. Based in Brooklyn, the space has established itself as a venue committed to experimentation, declining commissions and fees while prioritizing conversation between artists and audiences. Extreme Whether Show presents an exhibition that opens a space for exchange.
