On April 26th and 27th, from 1 to 6 pm, artists in DUMBO will open their doors to the public as part of DUMBO Open Studios, offering a rare look inside the art studios along the Brooklyn waterfront. Since the 1970s, DUMBO has been shaped by its vibrant art community. This interview series highlights a handful of participating artists in 2025. Each response offers a glimpse of what’s waiting behind the studio door. Kate Teale has been in DUMBO since January 2019. Her studio is at 20 Jay Street #M01.

What will we see in your studio?

I’m in the middle of preparing for two shows, so in my studio, you’ll see models and preliminary work for both shows. The first will be at Smack Mellon gallery, here in DUMBO, in December of this year, and the next is at the Gallery of the University of the South in Tennessee in January 2026. For both I’ll be making wall drawings based on architecture. On the walls in the studio there are drawings made from observation, mainly from a residency I had in an Oxford college in 2023. Most of the wall drawings are derived from those sketches. I simplify the sketches and scale them up, working in graphite and charcoal on Tyvek. In the gallery they are wallpaper-pasted directly onto the wall and they look like a drawing done on site. There’ll be one example of this in the studio, as well as the two large prints of graphite drawings of night windows that I exhibited earlier this year at Main Window.

My current studio is perfect, but I may have to move soon, so I am going to put up older works for sale at Open Studios. Studio prices! These will include Bedscapes, Floating World, and Bedscape 2 and 3. There will be smaller paintings and drawings on view and available. I enjoy Open Studios, and am very happy to talk, answer questions and demonstrate things, so please introduce yourself.
