Art Spiel Picks: Just for Laughs Exhibitions in December 2024

HIGHLIGHTS

From Manhattan to Brooklyn, there is funny business happening in the galleries this holiday season, quite literally. Portraits of humorous creatures in a solo exhibition titled Donut Dog by Nancy Elsamanoudi at Doghouse Gallery are an opening act to the performances at the Brooklyn Comedy Collective. Slightly absurd paintings of “Lost” posters by Jeffrey Morabito crack a joke in a two-person exhibition titled Flat Theater at Space 776 (CLOSING DECEMBER 18th), while a humorous undertone sets the mood in the Paintings and Chairs group exhibition at Zepster Gallery.

Kejoo Park: A Reflective Landscape Architect Turned Visual Artist

Kejoo Park is a Korean-American artist, landscape artist and architect. In her works, Park focuses on the duality of the internal and external worlds and her paintings, objects and installations manifest the alienation between man and nature; they address external nature, which is revealed in what man did not create himself. However, its potential and uniqueness lie in its creative ideas and actions, which develop through the influence of external structures and the engagement with culture and society.

Elena Chesnykh’s paintings at Space 776 depict women in landscapes—the vitality of the body merges with a dynamic natural world into a sensual dance of color and shape, sometimes in reference to harsh current events such as the war in Ukraine. The show, curated by Dasha Bazanova, will be on view from July 22 to August 17, 2022.
