Recording is Seeing at Tappeto Volante: Marta Lee 11:11

A few weeks ago, Marta Lee visited my studio. A few days after that visit, she texted me:

“Hey, what is the deal with that long wood piece of molding that was kind of to the left of where u were sitting? It’s gorgeous”

Marta was referring to an 8-foot-long piece of molding I’ve used as a mahlstick (also spelled ‘maulstick’) since 2018. I probably found it in the trash in my first studio building on Grand Street in Bushwick, and I’ve never thought of it beyond its use as an object to balance my arm on while painting. But Marta was right – it is sort of gorgeous. It’s got a spiraling geometric pattern carved into it, and paint streaks where I swipe it while lifting brushes. This realization led to another – just how unique Marta’s way of seeing the world really is.

Judi Keeshan – Mixed Magic at Tappeto Volante Projects

Mixed Magic, the first solo exhibition in New York by Judi Keeshan, curated by Jared Deery and JJ Manford at Tappeto Volante. The show runs through April 6th, 2025.

In Judi Keeshan’s first New York Exhibition, titled Mixed Magic, curators Jared Deary and JJ Manford present a wide survey of works from 2017 to 2024. To assemble the show, they selected the works directly from her studio, flipping through a massive collection of works as if browsing a record store. They let the images on canvas guide them—the characters and stories revealed themselves to the curators, just as they now await discovery by new audiences within the gallery.

David Syre’s Black Drawings: The Inner Light

The creative process is inexplicable. It doesn’t require anything but what the creator needs or chooses to use, and there are no guidelines as to how it works: Tolstoy felt he had to write “each day without fail.” Robert Rauschenberg often had The Young and the Restless on television at his studio. Virginia Woolf used to walk miles and miles. There is no telling what will ignite the process, but like a flash of lightning or fireworks in the night sky, it contains such a force that with the right conditions, generates sublime beauty. American outsider artist David Syre found this force when he was only a child in his Pacific Northwestern family home: The intuitive act of pushing crayons on paper on the floor of his grandmother’s kitchen remained in the heart of his practice. Syre’s art evolved and transformed in time, but the pastels remained––in the end, it turned into a persistent, continuing series of over 4500 pastel drawings on black paper. 40 of these drawings are now hanging on the walls of SARAHCROWN New York, a young contemporary gallery in Tribeca, and at the gallery’s booth at the Outsider Art Fair, gathered for two concurrent solo exhibitions titled David Syre: The Black Drawings.

Erika Ranee – Wired for Bold

The tension between “inside” and “outside” in Erika Ranee’s paintings draw you into an enclosed space with an explosive and rhythmic internal movement. The vibrant colors, organic shapes, and linear marks that link the forms like veins, altogether resonate with living organisms, body, or microscopic landscapes. The artist shares with Art Spiel what brought her to art, her thought and work processes, as well as her current projects.
