Care / Condition / Control at 601Artspace

In Dialogue

The group exhibition Care / Condition / Control, which ends its run at 601Artspace on April 27th, takes its conceptual root, quite literally, in the form of hair. Experienced by different generations, cultures, genders, and identities, one’s relationship to the very follicles that grow from us and upon us is deeply personal and unique to each of us. As each artist mines their own stories from these relationships, Chapman expands upon the inspiration and undertaking of such a complicated and tangled subject. Meryl Meisler: QUIRKYVISION at the PORTRAIT(S) Festival in Vichy

Meryl Meisler’s QUIRKYVISION will be featured at Le Palais des Congrès de Vichy during the PORTRAIT(S) Tenth Annual Festival in Vichy, France, from June 24 through September 4, 2022. Meisler’s images of sizzling disco nights and strip-tease clubs, domestic Jewish family in Long Island suburbia, or life in a public school in one of the roughest Brooklyn neighborhoods—encapsulate with humor and a sharp gaze life at the 1970s and 1980s New York City area.

Artists on Coping: Meryl Meisler

During the Coronavirus pandemic, Art Spiel is reaching out to artists to learn how they are coping.

Meryl Meisler studied photography at the University of Wisconsin, and with Lisette Model in New York where she began to capture the city’s street life and infamous nightlife. A 1978 C.E.T.A. Artist Grant supported her portfolio on Jewish identity, after which she began a three-decade career as a NYC public school art teacher. Upon retirement, she began releasing large bodies of previously unseen work, including two books, A Tale of Two Cities: Disco Era Bushwick, and Purgatory & Paradise SASSY ‘70s Suburbia & The City. She is currently working on her next monograph, New York PARADISE LOST Bushwick Era Disco, and is represented by CLAMPART.

Meryl Meisler – LES YES!

In 2008, The National Trust for Historic Preservation placed the LES on their list of America’s Most Endangered Historic Places. “LES YES!” at The Storefront Project  upcoming exhibition features Meryl Meisler’s photographs of the Lower East Side during the 1970’s & 1980s.  Meisler, who was born in the Bronx and raised in Long Island, captured in her photos  a tight knit immigrant and working-class neighborhood during difficult times in NYC history.
