Learning with Trees-Artists for Climate and Environmental Solutions

Curator Martina Tanga had been reflecting on the ideas behind Learning With Trees – Artists for Climate and Environmental Solutions long before the exhibition took shape. In 2022, she read Ben Rawlence’s The Treeline, a book tracing how the Boreal forest is shifting under the impact of climate change. That reading sparked the idea that trees could serve as a highly accessible and disarmingly effective way to approach conversations about climate change.

Art Spiel Picks: Boston Exhibitions in March 2025

Highlights

We’ve passed the Ides of March and 2025 is in full swing. Teslas are burning, the stock market is crashing, and the Black Lives Matter plaza in Washington DC has been completely demolished at the cost of six hundred thousand dollars to taxpayers. In Boston, we await some kind of tipping point, like the good revolutionaries we are. There’s no better time to be making art that will undoubtedly reflect the time we’re living in, even if only subversively. Because dissent is now a truly radical act. It’s also Women’s History Month and there are no greater radicals than women artists, blazing trails and making visible what might otherwise be ignored. Here are some highlights to celebrate.

A glimpse into the Sam and Adele Golden Foundation Residency Program

The Sam and Adele Golden Foundation Residency Program began as a dream of Sam Golden. Sam was a paint maker for most of his life at Bocour Artist Colors in New York City and in retirement, moved to upstate New York with his wife Adele.  Sam was an incredibly restless retiree.  Emma Golden, Sam’s granddaughter says that with the push of Adele, he called up his son, Mark Golden, and asked him to come help him make paint. That is how Golden Artist Colors started in 1980—in an old cow barn in rural New Berlin, New York. This fall I had the wonderful opportunity to be a resident at the Golden Foundation and after this deep experience I wanted to share with Art Spiel readers some insight into this unique residency by interviewing Emma Golden, who currently runs it. When he realized retirement wasn’t for him, he began making paint in a barn, delivering it to his artist-buddies’ studios in New York City.
